Fenninger moves to the top of the World with victory in Are

HEAD World Cup Rebel Anna Fenninger continued her assault on the defence of her Overall World Cup Title with a dominant win in Are, Sweden. A first run lead was followed up with a green light at the end of the second run and her third Giant Slalom win of the season and fifth win in all. Nadia Fanchini took second with Eva Maria Brem in third.
“I am living a dream,” Fenninger said at the press conference. “From the very beginning of the season with a great victory in Sölden until now, it just has been amazing. I am very happy I can show my best skiing here again.”
This is the third win for Fenninger in Are and afterwards she said: “I love Are. Earning another victory here is really cool. The top part of the course is always tough. I usually struggle to find the right tempo up there. I had this problem last year as well.”
While the margin of victory was healthy, 0.71 seconds, Fenninger added, “even if it often looks simple, these victories are hard work.” This is Fenninger pushing it to the limit.
There were also great performances by Sara Hector in taking seventh and Taina Barioz making her best result of the season in coming from a start of 30 to finish 8th. Hector had been in fourth place after the first run and was disappointed with her second run that saw her drop down the leader board. Barioz meanwhile climbed the leader board from 15th after the first run.
This was the second time this season that the Women had visited Are and it has proved a happy hunting ground for the HEAD World Cup Rebels as Sara Hector was second last time around. This dominant win for Fenninger sees her stretch her lead in the Giant Slalom standings to 86 points with one race remaining, the World Cup Finals, in Giant Slalom over Brem. Fenninger now has a lead of 45 points over Tina Maze in the race for the Overall.
Along with Fenninger and Hector, Liz Goergl has also qualified for the World Cup Finals.
